Thymus vulgaris ct. linalool
The card that popped out for my Sunday Essential Oil Reflection is Thyme. Thyme is for apathy. It is fortifying and helps to eliminate old habits!
Sweet Thyme with its warm, spicy-herbaceous, penetrating and green aroma has analgesic, anti-rheumatic, antiseptic, antibacterial, carminative, digestive, emmenagogue, expectorant, fungicidal, rubefacient and general tonic properties. The essential oil is steam distilled from the flowering herb. Sweet Thyme’s antispasmodic, neurotonic and stimulating properties are helpful in dealing with fatigue, depression, insomnia, headaches and stress related tiredness. Sweet Thyme can be very strengthening to the nerves and may help with memory and concentration.
Sweet Thyme’s antiseptic properties can be helpful when dealing with bronchitis, bronchial spasm, sinusitis, sore throats and tonsillitis. While its antispasmodic properties are helpful in dealing with arthritis, sciatic, rheumatism, gout, pain, muscular aches & pains and sports injuries. Sweet Thyme has also been used for muscular rheumatism. Its antiviral properties can be helpful for colitis and diarrhea. Sweet Thyme has also been used in blends for cystitis, urethritis, candida and vaginitis, as well as blends used during childbirth.
Thyme is another essential oil available on the market in different chemotypes. Sweet Thyme (ct. linalool) is the one that I am recommending as it is generally considered to be safe to use.
Energetically, Sweet Thyme relieves fear and apathy. It can help to promote self-confidence and courage. It may also be helpful in helping one to eliminate old habit patterns one might be still clinging to.
Caution: Sweet Thyme is a much gentler oil than Red/White Thyme and is generally considered safe to use. Red/White Thyme Thymus vulgaris ct. thymol contains around 40% phenols (thymol and carvacrol). These give it the potential of being a strong skin irritant and it should be avoided in pregnancy. Personally, I would never recommend using the thymol chemotype topically, although its powerful broad-spectrum antibacterial, antiviral, immunostimulant, antiparasitic and antifungal properties could make it useful in cleaning surfaces and helping to clear airborne infections.
